What Recruiters Need to Know About Today's Job Seekers

While I’m not a recruiter by trade, I am an HR professional and an expert resume writer. I spend a lot of my time counseling my clients and researching ways to help them be successful. To provide the most relevant services, I constantly talk to and learn from the recruiters in my network and analyze the current market trends. In addition, I love to follow up with clients and hear how they found their jobs. In this post, I’m going to share what I’ve learned with you. So here are a few things you need to know about today’s job seeker.

It’s All Social Now

The folks at Work4 have described the traits of social job seekers. But let me restate the facts. Over 93% of companies use social media to find talent and we know that the Internet is the most important tool for those looking for a job. More than 14 million people reported that social media helped them find the last job, with Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter being the most mentioned.

Girls, Girls, Girls

Beyoncé was right “Girls Run the World.” It’s true – there are more women enrolled in college than men. There are more women with college degrees than men. And there are more women looking for work than men. These ladies are educated, determined and highly skilled. Statistics show that today’s social job seeker is 70% more likely to be a woman.

They’ve Done Their Research

Job seekers are getting better and better at researching companies online. They go to LinkedIn to search for and connect with a company and its employees. They follow company pages on Facebook. They follow companies on Twitter and Instagram. Candidates today will even search for recruiters and HR managers once they get a name. Basically, they’re doing the same thing to you that you’re doing to them. Just as you get suspicious if you can’t find them, the get suspicious if they can’t find you. Fair play!

They Just Want To Be Happy

No one has ever said, “I want to work in a highly stressful environment, surrounded by idiots, jerks and drama queens.” Looking for a job is stressful. It’s one of those things we have to do to because we’re unhappy or unfulfilled. Today’s job seekers want to work for a great organization with great team members. They want to be compensated for their work. And they want good benefits, corporate perks and to be able to use their mobile devices at work. Who could blame them?

They Know Someone

It’s no secret that the best recruits come in as referrals. Companies love referral candidates because that person probably comes from a successful employee. Job seekers know it’s important to network in order to get work. They understand the importance of leveraging their friends to get a better job. In fact, candidates are 60% more likely to apply for a position sent to them from a personal connection

Happy Hunting

The job market has changed and so have job seekers. Today’s candidates want meaningful work, and they’re willing to work with you to find it. Help them! Keep the things we’ve discussed in mind and I know you’ll both be successful.
